 Remember the days of avocado-green appliances? How about light-blue tuxedos? While just the thought of these items makes us cringe today, at one time these were considered in style.

Who predicts the color trends that define a moment in time? One source is the Pantone Color Institute, based in New York City. Leatrice Eiseman is the executive director of this color prognosticator who also heads up the committee that chooses Pantone's color of the year. As she says, it's the company's effort "to distill the prevailing mood into a single hue."

So what single color defines 2012? Tangerine Tango (PANTONE 17-1463 TCX). Eismann describes it as "a spirited reddish orange that continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward. It's building on the ideas of courage and action that we want to move on to better things."

To arrive at its selection, Pantone quite literally combs the world looking for color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films that are in production, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations and other socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, availability of new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.

Another predictor of color--The Color Association--also based in New York, released its prediction of colors in the 2012-2013 women's fall fashion collections. The direct reflection of ocean is the basis for fall fashion and beauty, along with autumn colors that reflect a sense of warmth, according to the association. Haze--a light color with murky, purple undertones--and jellies--sheer colors that are meant to be layered--round out the fall fashion palette.

The latest color palette is an important trend, led by the fashion and beauty world, which quickly transcends products, appliances, cars and other consumer.
